More Squirrel Trivia

Thomas Jefferson once visited the Adirondacks before writing the Declaration of Independence. He wrote about the remarkable Red Squirrel whose features he never seen before. Red Squirrels are very common in Virgina, I guess he had more important things on his mind like founding a new country that he wouldn't recognize a common squirrel.

Just missed each other

In 1603 Henry Hudson was exploring the upper part of the Hudson River at the same time Samuel De Champlain was exploring Lake Champlain

A Humble Man

Verplanck Colvin was the greatest off all Adirondack Explorers. He was the First man to the top of many Adirondack Peaks. So why is the only mountain named for him a lesser peak (there are 39 peaks higher) when tradition says the discoverer gets to name it? It was considered Poor taste to name your discovery after yourself. This explains why there is no Lake Colvin or Colvin River.

Dan Quayle could beat him in a spelling bee

Q  Why is the Adirondak Loj spelled that way?

A  It was originally spelled right. But when it was run by Melville Dewey (yes the Dewey Decimal system guy) he changed the spelling. Dewey thought the English Language spelling system was to hard and tried to promote a simplified spelling system hence the spelling of the Adirondack Lodge as Adirondak Loj
